Columbia County Oregon

Columbia County is bordered on the east by the Columbia River, on the south by Multnomah County and Washington County, and on the west by Clatsop County. The southern County line is approximately 30 minutes from Portland, the largest metropolitan area in Oregon. The western County line is approximately 30 minutes from the Pacific coast.

The County's northern and eastern boundaries are outlined by 62 miles of Columbia River shoreline. Columbia County enjoys the longest stretch of the Columbia River in the State of Oregon. The Columbia River is a major route of ocean-going vessels and is a popular fishing ground, as well as a popular boating and windsurfing river.

Facts regarding the early history of Columbia County are few. It is known that a New England trading vessel, the Columbia Rediviva, commanded by Captain Robert Gray arrived in the summer of 1792 with the first Euro-Americans to see the County's timbered shoreline. In 1805, the explorers Lewis and Clark traveled and camped along the County's Columbia River shoreline.

Carved out of Washington County in 1854, its past was tied to commercial fishing, water transportation and lumber. Industrialization has accelerated in recent years but timber, dairy and horticulture remain important. Natural gas fields have been identified and are producing.

The County offers the only two marine parks in Oregon: Sand Island on the Columbia River and J.J. Collins Memorial Marine Park on the Multnomah Channel.

Cornerstone Cafe

The Cornerstone Café was purchased on May 13, 2008 and is a family-run establishment. Owner and proprietor Viki Overbay works alongside her husband, Mark, and son, Chef Dustin Mattox and Viki’s daughter-in-law Michelle. Located in a historic building in downtown Rainier, guests can not only enjoy excellent cuisine in an uplifting and positive atmosphere but incredible views of the Columbia River as well. The staff at the Cornerstone takes pride in using only the freshest local ingredients, products, and services. Only fresh and local produce is used to make the daily soups, homemade salad dressings, salsa, and tartar sauce (which guest’s swear is the best tarter sauce anywhere). The staff’s goal is to ensure every guest has prompt, courteous service (with a smile) and that they consistently receive a delicious home-cooked meal each and every time they set foot through the door. Perhaps the best quality the Cornerstone offers is the sense of family both guests and staff share. When you dine at “the Stone”, you instantly become part of the family. This is seen in the courteous way guests and staff are treated, in the consistent and excellent service each guest experiences and with the care and dedication that every meal is cooked and served with. But don’t take our word for it – make a trip in on a Friday night for our famous Prime Rib or famous “Noahnator Burger” or a Saturday morning for our “Hungry Man Breakfast”. See for yourself what everyone is talking about. You won’t be disappointed with the generous portions, excellent coffee, handmade milkshakes, and a great vibe. Check us out today!

Country Media, Inc.

Home of the St. Helens Chronicle and Clatskanie Chief.

The Chronicle is proud to be Columbia County’s oldest newspaper and oldest business.
The paper began in 1881 as the Oregon Mist, which eventually became the St. Helens Mist.
The St. Helens Mist combined on April 7, 1933, with a relative startup, the St. Helens Sentinel, which began in 1926.
For more than three decades, The Sentinel-Mist was published every Friday with a yearly subscription rate of$2. At one time, it claimed to have the largest weekly circulation in Oregon.
Paul S. Paulson started the St. Helens Chronicle – a free one-page sheet paper – in 1936 and distributed it free of charge every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
By the 1950s, The Chronicle began charging an annual subscription rate of $2.50.
On July 1, 1968, The Chronicle purchased The Sentinel-Mist and dubbed itself The Sentinel-Mist Chronicle. At this time it was Columbia County’s only newspaper.
The name eventually changed to The Chronicle and Sentinel-Mist, and consolidated to The Chronicle on March 25, 2009.
The Chronicle is Columbia County’s largest classified and real estate section.

The Chief has served the people of northern Columbia County and eastern Clatsop County for over a century. From 1922 to 2014 it was owned and operated by four generations of the Steele family. In 2014, Portland-based Country Media purchased the publication from the Steele family. Country Media owns newspapers in Manzanita, Tillamook, Lincoln City and St. Helens. The Chief is rich in good will and loyalty among its readers, as demonstrated by numerous local and statewide awards.

InRoads Credit Union

We all thrive when we grow together. But it’s also vitally important to be an individual. The merger of those two trains of thought is alive and well at InRoads Credit Union, where local people offer local service with local pride.

At InRoads, we understand the community and have been proud to be part of it for over 75 years. It all started with the employees of two local paper mills. The year was 1938.

Back then, the families who called this region home lived on less than $50 a month. They built homes, opened businesses and started families. Over the generations, our community grew and so did the credit union.

Today, we’re serving the great-great grandkids of some of those founding members – helping them plan ahead, run businesses, buy cars, finance homes and achieve their financial goals and dreams. Membership in the credit union is available to individuals that live, work, attend school, volunteer, or worship in Columbia, Clatsop, Cowlitz, Multnomah and Washington Counties. This also includes individuals with immediate family who are existing credit union members. Immediate family is considered to be: spouse, child, step-child, grandchild, parent, step-parent, grandparent, or sibling.

Here, it’s a different kind of social networking. You’ll find us teaching financial education in local schools, as well as offering loan rates that keep monthly budgets in check, financial products for local businesses, and services designed to save you money. In other words, we care about your family, local business, and the whole community.

You can rely on us and each other. Together we are InRoads Credit Union.
